Worcestershire Early Music

Worcestershire Early Music

is a non-profit organisation devoted to education, entertainment and enjoyment of early music. Please visit the new website, www.earlymusicworcs.org.uk

We worked on a project  with students to commemorate the 750th Anniversary of the Battle of Evesham.
We worked with Vale of Evesham School and Simon de Montfort Middle School.

Click here to view some of the things they created.

A shield from one student included the unicorn.

Battlesong1 - includes 4 teams which represented 'armies' (represented by the heraldic symbols of unicorns, lions, keys and leopards).

Students also wrote poems for peace.

They also created a peace dance, but for child protection reasons we are unable to show this on the web.

Past information is below.

Early Music in Wychavon and Bromsgrove Schools

With the support of both Worcestershire County Council and Wychavon District Council we ran a project with middle school students entitled ’A Tudor Betrothal’. Students learned about Queen Mary’s Betrothal to Philip of Spain. The project  included St Barnbas and Simon de Montfort Middle Schools and Lickey End First School. Groups  met, learning songs and dances, creating new ones of their own, and joining with their ‘sister school’ to work toward a show, which was presented to friends, family and the local community. After this we took the students on a ‘tour day’ where they can share the show with other area schools.

Comments from parents included:

•    ‘fantastic- very enjoyable’
•    ‘Brilliant! Loved the adaptation by the children plus the music and songs’
•    ‘fantastic performance; very refreshing’
•    ‘very entertaining’
•    ‘very imaginative and lovely performance’
•    ‘She really enjoyed it’
•    ‘fun, learning and music. Really enjoyed.’

The Bromsgrove Junior Waits started meeting in earnest in January 2010 on Thursdays at Parkside Middle School.  Year 5 and up were invited to join. Singers were encouraged to take part and Instrumentalists Grade 2+.

Early Music Workshop Day--All Ages:
We have offered selected Saturdays where singers and players (both students age 10+ and adults) can enjoy making music together.  The first was 'Venetian Splendour' held at the Friends Meeting House, Worcester on Sat. 29 October 2012 from 1.30-5.30pm. .

Comments on the day included: "I've enjoyed it and would like to do more like this. Thank you!" and "Thank you for your work organising the session." and "Thank you to both of you. Looking forward to the next one".  We  repeated this on 16 February 2012 in the evening, as part of our Worcester Early Music Week.

The Waits programmes and the Baroque Chamber music course were funded by Worcestershire Arts Education in previous years, and previously the Worcester Waits received two years of Youth Music Funding.  The Worcester Early Music Week(end) has enjoyed one off grants from The Elmley Foundation, Bransford Trust, the Co-op and Grassroots.

Half Term Youth Baroque Orchestra and Vocal Course

The  Baroque Orchestra course first took place in May 2008 and then again in February 2009 at the Worcester Guildhall.  A perfect match in terms of architecture and time period, the Guildhall has a splendid wooden floor, long gallery feel, and acoustic that is fitting for the music of the Baroque.  We have enjoyed the support of the Mayor's Office, and the very helpful staff who work at the Guildhall each day.
